- History of Asthma
Asthma was long considered a psychosomatic disease. Hippocrates, circa 450 BC, was the first to call the disease “asthma” and to recognize it as a medical condition. During the 1930s–50s, asthma was counted as one of the ‘holy seven’ psychosomatic illnesses; psychoanalytic theories described its aetiology as psychological, with treatment often primarily involving psychoanalysis and other ‘talking cures’. As the asthmatic wheeze was interpreted as the child’s suppressed cry for its mother, psychoanalysts viewed the treatment of depression as especially important for individuals with asthma.
